PEARLY KLOMP was inspired by his Eurasian grandma’s cooking, an amalgamation of 2 cultures. Her famous dish “Pearly Beads”, made out of basil and seasoned meatballs coated with gluten rice transpired the look of the pair of clogs. Hong Kong being “the Pearl of the Orient” is a reflection of her past. RICE, as banal as an everyday stable for major part of the world, can be as precious as a pearl in the sea; yet most of us tend to take it for granted. The rattan grocery bag normally stuffed with Grandma Ai-lene’s goodies. Within it one would find a jar of Jasmine Tea, small bag of French pastries, freshly cut orchids, and peanut gluten rice wrapped with bamboo leaves. She was a big (Dutch) Cheese lover, and an occasional Chinese salted fish would make her day. It is a bag full of joy and stories to be told.
