More interaction between students and teachers

Multi-grade classes are those in which students from two or more grades are taught by one teacher in one room at the same time. They are commonly found in remote poor areas where schools usually only have one to two teachers for several grades. In western part of China, the population distribution is widespread. In addition with the decreasing birth rate caused by the family planning policy and resource limitation for teachers, the multi-grade teaching model will still be practiced in the near future.

In traditional multi-grade classes, teachers separate the instruction of different grades, hampering the quality and time of education received by each grade. The new pedagogy "Vertical Interactive Participatory Teaching Format" would allow more interaction between students and teachers, through the integration of the curricula of different grades. Students in different grades can explore new knowledge and study in a classroom at the same time.

Vertical Interactive Participatory Teaching Format

Vertical Interactive Participatory Teaching Format breaks through limitation of student’s grades and teaching aid. It allows teacher to conduct lesson to different grades of students and with various subjects in one class at the same time by integrating similar points or the same points of the knowledge. Accordingly, students with different grades can learn together, exchange their ideas and express their opinions which end up with the participation of both students and teachers in a classroom at the same time.

According to statistic, there are a total of 961 schools with 40,989 students and 2,133 teachers under the multi-grade teaching model in seven selected project counties. Overall, there are 130 schools with 18,819 students joining this project in seven selected school districts. In these designated districts, among 79 schools with 4,747 students and 174 teachers are under multi-grade teaching model

Sharing from teachers

"The Innovative Multi-Grade Teaching training programme enhanced my teaching method and technique, thus my teaching ability was strengthened. Besides, I learned how to integrate teaching materials for multi-grade classes and lead academic exchange for students of several grades in a classroom at the same time. Hence, there was a great improvement in student’s homework. That was the most impressible thing to me. Last but not least, I sincerely thank all the programme teachers who had given help and care to me during the programme." - Zhi-jiang Chen, Hing Wang Shan Village Primary School, Tian Shui Hua Nui Centre

"The programme allowed me to learn more  Innovative Multi-Grade Teaching. I experienced participatory-method training and had a study trip to Beijing for my teaching enrichment. My teaching method became more diversify. Furthermore, I was honoured to educate and share my teaching experiences to teachers from rural schools. It was hard but I was glad to do so! I sincerely hope this programme will carry on and benefit more teachers and students." - Yan-li Yang, Mei Ji District Hua Nui Centre School
